The Shelter

If you have to stay a night in the woods, it's always good to have a shelter;  Quebec's forest can pass from a comfortable 20*C to a frisky 5*C in only a few hours! Here are the steps to follow before building a shelter.
  1. Start building your shelter 4h before the sunset. Building in the dark can get quite depressive and dangerous.
  2. Choose the right place to build your camp. A perfect place would be in front of a big rock, so that the first heat would bounce off of it.
  3. Be sure that if it rains, you won't be flooded. Don't camp at the edge of a cliff.
This shelter is extremely easy to build and the only thing you will need is solid rope, like the one shown in the previous tab.

  1. Find two solid trees 2.5m from each other.
  2. Find a log of 6-7cm in thickness and at least 3m long. Using the rope you have, attach one end at 1.5m high and the other one at 0.5m high. If you have rock-climbing rope, you can use it instead of the log.
  3. Build walls using green leaves and branches, make it waterproof in case of rain. If you have an emergency blanket, use it as show on the picture.
  4. Build a fire 1m from the entrance of your shelter (see fire tab).
Of course, there are other types of shelters, this one is easy to build and requires a minimum of tools and practice.
This is what it should look like; it was built by children from Camp Hostyn near Montreal.

Notice the holes in the walls. Make sure you don't have any, these kids would be soaked if it was to rain.
