Survival Kit

Before going in the woods, it's important to be prepared. He is the strict minimum of what should be brought with you. Place all of this in a metal box, make sure it's waterproof.

Knives

The knife is the most important tool in the woods. Without a knife, your chances of survival are quite low. It's very important to choose the knife with extreme care. I personally quarry two of them, just in case.

The first knife is the one you will use in almost every situation: chopping wood, gathering mushrooms, carving, etc... It's important to be sure this knife is solid and reliable. The most reliable knives are the ones made from only one piece of metal. Here is mine, I use it since the age of 12, it never deceived me.

It's good to have a secondary knife, just in case the first one is lost or broken. The second knife should be compact. I recommend those hunting/fishing folding knives; sold in almost any supermarket.

The cost of the knife has nothing to do with its efficiency. Don't buy a fancy knife, the knife should cost less than 50$. 

Lighter and matches

Fire is a source of comfort and protection that has been around for a very long time. I recommend always carrying fire with you. A lighter can be really reliable, but, just in case, take matches with you. You never know when you will be out of gas.
The choice of the lighter is very important. The lighter should have a powerful flame. The typical 1$ lighter are not suitable for the woods.
 Instead of that, take efficient lighter, one that has a very hot flame that's almost invisible, just like on the picture on top. A good lighter should cost about 10$.

If you are unlucky and your lighter stops working, use matches.

Compass

If you are lost, this little object could save your life. Carefully read the BEING FOUND tab before you decide to start moving anywhere from your current position.

Flashlight

Even though fire is a source of light, a flashlight can be very useful. I recommend using one with a dell light.
They last longer and need battery change every five years! I find it practical to wear mine on my belt, mine came with a case.

Bug repellent

Bugs are a real danger, especially in the North.
Bug repellent is simply necessary to get rid of the mosquitoes and other biting insects. Repellent can make the difference between a good healthy mood and a very bad mood; critical during a survival situation.

Bug repellent is sold in big stores such as Walmart and Canadian Tire for a reasonable price/quality.

Fishing lines

This is very resistant and light rope. It can be used in many situations such as building a shelter. It's quite expensive, but it has been proved to be a very good thing to bring in the woods.

Don't forget, that fishing line can also be useful for...fishing!
